HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, has presented the State of the Energy Report: Dubai 2014 to the diplomatic missions of the member states of the United Nations, as part of the requirements to achieve the national initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The report provides key pointers on energy in Dubai and the most salient steps taken by the Emirate to secure energy to meet its requirements, while maintaining focus on green sustainable development. It was developed to highlight the successful steps that promoted Dubai’s leading position and is an important milestones in its efforts to become a an ecological- and trade-friendly economy on a regional and international level. This is set to improve the outlook for the UAE Vision 2021 for the UAE to become one of the best countries of the world by 2021.

Al Tayer also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York to organise the UAE-led 2014 World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in association with the Dubai Green Economy Partnership, which will be held in Dubai on 15-16 April 2014, in conjunction with the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2014).

The event was hosted by the UAE’s Permanent Mission to the UN, attended by its ambassador, HE Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, along with senior representatives from other organisations.
“Our fruitful cooperation with the UNDP is one of the main creative steps in our efforts to achieve sustainable development and share our expertise and practices with all the countries of the world to achieve our common aspirations towards a better tomorrow for all,” said Al Tayer.

“Energy is one of the key components for sustainable development and the foundation for a positive environment that encourages collaboration, partnership, creativity, and innovation and a strong element in Dubai’s successful bid to host Expo 2020. Now that we have been awarded this honour to welcome the world, we are strengthening our commitment by deepening our relationship with international key partners, including the UNDP.”

“One example of this is the State of Energy Report, which provides the basis for a knowledge economy, and is one of the main factors for the successful achievement of the vision of our wise leadership to transform Dubai into a Smart City,” added Al Tayer.
“Sustainable energy helps reduce poverty, spurs economic growth, and promote overall human and sustainable development. Yet 1.2 billion people worldwide cannot access electricity, and more than twice as many rely on traditional biomass for cooking and/or heating. The UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative is helping to promote action around three ambitious goals for 2030: to ensure universal access to modern energy services, double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix,” said Helen Clark.

“Today, we testify that sustainable energy is no longer an abstract concept, but a viable and necessary pathway, for both developed and developing countries. The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy’s efforts, captured in this State of the Energy report, represent some of the compelling, concrete actions that will underpin this transition,” said HE Lana Zaki Nusseibeh.
“In the same spirit, the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon) and the UNDP have both initiated an unprecedented Youth Empowerment Programme for Student Thought Leaders under the name, The Carbadors,” said Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon.

“The Carbadors initiative is very close to our heart. By engaging youth in steering our country towards a more resource-conscious and green economy, we are helping them to take responsibility. The Carbadors is the Carbon Ambassador’s Programme to engage university students in a voluntary collaboration with the UAE’s efforts to create a culture of sustainable development, by providing free training opportunities for tomorrow’s leaders,” added Salman.
